SOVEREIGN CLOUD & LINUX14 MIN READAUTHORED BY GENE SALVATORE

Why We Are Called GreenTree. From One of the Internet’s First Independent VMware ESXi Hosts (2007–2018) to Today’s Post-Broadcom High-Availability Linux Cloud.

Before "green cloud" was a marketing buzzword—and years before hyperscalers dominated virtual server hosting—Gene and Maureen Salvatore named GreenTree Hosting, LLC on March 1, 2007 around a concrete data center engineering mission: consolidating racks of power-hungry 1U physical servers onto VMware ESXi and vSphere hypervisors to slash data center electricity and cooling waste.

By 2010, our /hosting/vmware-virtual-machines/ platform was cited on Server Fault as one of the only independent commercial providers offering native VMware ESXi Virtual Machines (VMDK) directly to developers and businesses. Here is the complete story of our 2007–2018 VMware ESXi era, what happened when our 45-page WordPress site crashed in late December 2018, why Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware changed virtualization economics forever, and how we restored every historic 2007–2018 backlink into today’s multi-region NVMe Linux, Docker, and PostgreSQL 16 cloud.

TAKEAWAY 01

Why "GreenTree" Was Named GreenTree (March 2007): Coming out of operating 8 physical server racks in Boston (500 Rutherford Ave) and Connecticut, we named GreenTree around consolidating power-hungry 1U physical servers onto VMware ESXi/vSphere hypervisors—cutting data center electricity and BTU cooling waste years before "green cloud" became an industry cliché.

TAKEAWAY 02

One of the Web’s First Independent VMware ESXi Hosts (2008–2018): While mass-market hosts only offered oversold OpenVZ or Virtuozzo containers, GreenTree provisioned true hardware-virtualized VMware ESXi Virtual Machines (/hosting/vmware-virtual-machines/), earning independent citations on Server Fault in October 2010 (serverfault.com/questions/187336).

TAKEAWAY 03

The December 2018 WordPress Crash ("The Cobbler’s Children"): Our 45+ page WordPress site ranked Page 1 for VMware ESXi hosting, SmarterMail, and Connecticut/New England cloud until late December 2018, when a multi-plugin failure (wp-Table-Reloaded, NextGEN Gallery, Easy FancyBox, Wordfence, Jetpack) took the frontend down while client VMware, Linux, BIND DNS, and SmarterMail servers never missed a beat.

TAKEAWAY 04

From Post-Broadcom VMware ESXi to High-Availability NVMe Linux & Containers (2024–2026): Following Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, elimination of the free ESXi hypervisor tier, and steep per-core subscription hikes, we evolved that same bare-metal consolidation DNA into our 3-region Ubuntu 24.04 LTS NVMe + isolated Docker + writable standby PostgreSQL 16 + WireGuard mesh + Proxmox/SmarterMail stack—and restored 100% of our historic 2007–2018 URLs with permanent HTTP 301 redirects.

PART 01 // MARCH 1, 2007: WHY WE NAMED THE COMPANY "GREENTREE HOSTING"

1. From 500 Rutherford Ave to March 1, 2007: Why Server Consolidation Inspired the Name "GreenTree"

To understand why GreenTree Hosting, LLC was given its name on March 1, 2007, you have to step onto a physical data center floor in 2005 and 2006. Prior to founding GreenTree, Gene and Maureen Salvatore had spent a decade building database-driven web platforms (Online Imaging and RILiving.com in 1997–1998), helping scale Adgrafix Corporation (adgrafix.com, acquired by Allegiance Telecom) and Hosting.com, and building 8 full racks of physical 1U and 2U servers (Archieboy Holdings / AppiesHost.com / SupportFreaks.com) that merged with Boston Datacenters inside the carrier hotel at 500 Rutherford Avenue in Charlestown, Massachusetts.

In the mid-2000s, every dedicated customer or isolated application meant racking another physical 1U server—typically an IBM eServer xSeries or Dell PowerEdge spinning high-RPM SCSI drives, drawing continuous dual-feed A+B power, and dumping heat into the hot aisle 24 hours a day even when CPU utilization sat below 6%. When Boston Datacenters was sold to Hosted Solutions (later TierPoint) in November 2006, Gene and Maureen arranged a strategic management carve-out on March 1, 2007 to launch GreenTree Hosting, LLC.

Why the name GreenTree? Because our founding engineering mission was to replace sprawling racks of underutilized, power-hungry 1U physical servers with high-density VMware hypervisor consolidation—dramatically reducing data center kilowatt-hour draw, UPS load, and CRAC cooling waste while giving every customer stronger hardware isolation. As we documented on our original corporate profile pages (/about/corporate-profile/power-and-energy/, /about/corporate-profile/hosting-technology/, and /about/corporate-profile/organic-farming/), virtualizing physical racks onto VMware ESXi and vSphere allowed one enterprise host node to do the work of a full cabinet of legacy 1U boxes.

PART 02 // THE 2008–2018 VMWARE ESXI ERA & SERVER FAULT CITATIONS

2. When GreenTree Was One of the Only Independent VMware ESXi Virtual Machine Hosts on the Web

Between 2008 and 2014, if a systems administrator or software developer searched Google for a hosting provider that would rent a true VMware ESXi Virtual Machine—not an oversold OpenVZ container sharing a single kernel, and not a $2,000/month enterprise colocation contract—almost nobody offered it. Big-box hosts pushed cheap shared cPanel accounts or early Xen/OpenVZ slices where a noisy neighbor could starve disk I/O across the entire node.

GreenTree took the opposite path. Under our historic banner—"GreenTree Hosting offers Affordable VMWare, ESXi, vSphere, Cloud Hosting, Linux, WordPress and SmarterMail Managed Hosting Solutions on Customizable Platforms for Everyone!"—we built /hosting/vmware-virtual-machines/, provisioning genuine hardware-virtualized VMware ESXi and vSphere Virtual Machines with dedicated RAM reservations, isolated .vmdk storage volumes, custom ISO mounting, and direct choice of Linux (CentOS, RedHat, Ubuntu, Debian) or Windows Server guest operating systems.

Because we were one of the first and only independent providers offering native ESXi VMs at fair monthly rates, systems administrators began recommending us organically across technical forums. In October 2010, when an engineer asked on Server Fault ("Hosting virtual machine somewhere" — Question #187336), the community specifically cited greentreehosting.com/hosting/vmware-virtual-machines/ as one of the rare providers on the internet where you could actually host a VMware ESXi virtual machine—a citation that was subsequently mirrored across dozens of global developer and sysadmin archives (askdev.ru, stackanswers.net, qastack, and more).

On May 10, 2010 (/2010/05/10/new-look-for-greentree-hosting/), we launched our expanded 45+ page WordPress platform documenting our data center footprint across Boston, Massachusetts, Waterbury, Connecticut, Hartford, Connecticut, and Southbury, Connecticut (/datacenters/), our SmarterMail Enterprise cluster (/email/smartermail/), and real-time operational advisories like our August 27, 2011 Hurricane Irene Weather Advisory (/2011/08/27/hurricane-irene-weather-advisory/) when backup generators kept our Connecticut and Boston infrastructure online while commercial utility grids failed across New England.

PART 03 // LATE DECEMBER 2018: THE 45-PAGE WORDPRESS CRASH LESSON

3. The Cobbler’s Children Lesson: What Happened When Our Own 45-Page WordPress Site Crashed in Late December 2018

For eight straight years—from May 2010 through December 2018—our 45+ page WordPress website ranked on Page 1 of Google for VMware ESXi hosting, SmarterMail hosting, and Connecticut/New England web and cloud hosting. Then, in late December 2018 (between Wayback Machine captures 20181221061509 and 20190102233547), we lived the exact "cobbler’s children have no shoes" failure that thousands of business owners experience with plugin-heavy WordPress sites.

Our 2010 WordPress installation relied on a tangle of third-party PHP plugins to render pricing tables, lightboxes, image galleries, and security rules—including wp-Table-Reloaded, NextGEN Gallery, Easy FancyBox, Wordfence, and Jetpack. When an incompatible PHP and plugin update cascade corrupted the WordPress frontend in late December 2018, the public marketing site went down.

Here is the critical distinction: not a single customer VMware virtual machine, Linux server, BIND DNS zone, or SmarterMail mailbox went down. Our production hosting infrastructure maintained its 99.982% uptime standard without interruption. But because Gene was simultaneously traveling across North America as Director of Support & Deployment Engineering for enterprise healthcare Real-Time Location Services (RTLS) hospital deployments while keeping every existing hosting client’s servers running 24/7, he did not have 200 spare hours to manually rebuild a 45-page WordPress site from scratch.

So in January 2019, we replaced the broken WordPress install with a clean, single-page static HTML portal so existing clients could reach support and billing—and we quietly lost seven years of deep sub-page URLs (/hosting/vmware-virtual-machines/, /datacenters/, /about/corporate-profile/*). Living that pain firsthand is the exact reason GreenTree never builds fragile, plugin-dependent WordPress brochure sites anymore—and why we engineered our compiled, zero-plugin React 19 + TypeScript + Prerendered HTML platform (see WordPress, Elementor & Divi vs. Modern Compiled Web Platforms).

PART 04 // POST-BROADCOM VMWARE EVOLUTION TO NVME LINUX, PROXMOX & CONTAINERS

4. Why the Industry Moved Beyond Traditional VMware ESXi— And How That DNA Powers Our 2026 High-Availability Cloud

If you found this article by clicking a historic link for VMware ESXi hosting from Server Fault, a bookmark, or an archive directory, you might be wondering: Do we still deploy traditional standalone VMware ESXi virtual machines for new web and application workloads in 2026?

After Broadcom acquired VMware in late 2023, Broadcom terminated perpetual licensing, discontinued the beloved free VMware ESXi hypervisor tier in February 2024, ended legacy VMware Cloud Service Provider (VCSP) partner tiers for independent hosts, and forced mandatory multi-core subscription bundles that multiplied licensing costs by 3x to 10x for small and mid-sized deployments. Across the entire industry, the economics that made standalone ESXi VMs the smart, efficient choice in 2008 turned into a punishing licensing tax by 2024–2026.

Because one of our core principles since 1997 is "Frontier Engineering — Never Stuck in Comfort," we evolved our virtualization stack ahead of the curve while preserving every ounce of the isolation, uptime, and efficiency that gave GreenTree its name:

  • 1. Kernel-Isolated Docker Containers on Bare-Metal Ubuntu 24.04 LTS NVMe: For modern web applications and databases, booting a full guest OS kernel inside a .vmdk virtual disk wastes gigabytes of RAM and CPU cycles before a single HTTP request is served. Today, each client application runs inside its own isolated container with its own dedicated single-tenant PostgreSQL 16 database instance on enterprise NVMe storage.
  • 2. KVM / Proxmox VE & Proxmox Mail Gateway (mx.greentreemail.com): Where full hardware virtualization or dedicated mail-filtering appliances are required, westandardized on open-source KVM / Proxmox—powering our 3-tier enterprise email perimeter alongside SmarterMail Enterprise (/email).
  • 3. 3-Region Encrypted WireGuard Mesh + 60-Second Authoritative BIND DNS: Instead of relying on a single SAN or vMotion cluster inside one building, our active and warm-standby nodes replicate continuously across geographically separated North American data centers over an encrypted kernel-space WireGuard mesh (10.99.0.0/24), backed by our 5-node authoritative BIND DNS mesh (60s TTL) and automated PostgreSQL 16 failback row reconciliation (read Inside GreenTree’s High-Availability Cloud Stack).

5. Practicing What We Preach: Our Complete 2007–2018 Historic URL & Backlink Restoration Ledger

In our Zero-404 Domain Cutover Playbook and our interactive Forensic 301 Cutover Validator, we teach clients that every historic backlink earned over 10 or 20 years is a permanent piece of digital real estate that should resolve cleanly via an HTTP 301 redirect rather than dropping visitors onto a dead 404 page.

Using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine CDX API (web.archive.org/cdx/search/cdx?url=greentreehosting.com/*) and historical search index records from 2007 through 2018, we reconstructed the complete URL map of both our original 2007–2009 static .html site and our 2010–2018 45-page WordPress platform—and permanently restored every legacy path at the HTTP server layer so every historic link from Server Fault, sysadmin directories, and 19-year-old bookmarks resolves cleanly today:

TECHNICAL DUE DILIGENCE // FAQ

Frequently Asked Architectural Questions

Why was GreenTree Hosting named "GreenTree" when it was founded on March 1, 2007?

Coming out of operating 8 racks of power-hungry 1U physical servers in Boston (500 Rutherford Ave) and Connecticut, Gene and Maureen Salvatore named GreenTree Hosting around energy-efficient server consolidation—using VMware ESXi and vSphere hypervisors to run multiple isolated virtual machines on high-efficiency host servers, cutting data center electricity and cooling waste long before "green cloud" was a common industry phrase.

Did GreenTree really offer standalone VMware ESXi virtual machine hosting in 2010?

Yes. Our /hosting/vmware-virtual-machines/ service was one of the first and only independent hosting offerings where developers and sysadmins could rent a native VMware ESXi/vSphere virtual machine (.vmdk), earning organic citations on Server Fault as early as October 2010 (serverfault.com/questions/187336).

Can you help us migrate workloads off legacy VMware ESXi or vSphere after Broadcom’s licensing increases?

Yes. Whether you are looking to migrate web applications, relational databases, Linux workloads, or Windows/SmarterMail services off expensive post-Broadcom VMware ESXi hosts onto high-availability bare-metal Ubuntu LTS, KVM/Proxmox, or isolated Docker + PostgreSQL 16 clusters, we handle the complete zero-downtime migration and DNS cutover.

What happened to the old 2010–2018 GreenTree WordPress URLs like `/hosting/vmware-virtual-machines/` and `/datacenters/`?

Every historic URL from our 2007–2009 static HTML site and our 2010–2018 45-page WordPress site has been audited against the Internet Archive Wayback Machine CDX index and permanently restored via deterministic HTTP 301 redirects to its matching modern technical guide or infrastructure page.
